Ganesha Chaturthi

With the inauguration of Shukla Chaturthi in the month of Bhaadrapada according to Hindu calendar is celebrated one of the most popular festivals of Hindus, the Ganesha Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi in parts of Southern India. It is the occasion to commemorate the ascendancy of Lord Ganesha on earth, who is actually the son of divine Shiva & Parwati.

This festival is celebrated with great zeal by Maharashtriyans. Way before the festival, gigantic size clay models of Lord Ganesha are prepared. Ten days prior to the festive day, Ganesha is placed in the house by devotees and is worshiped. The Ganapatyas (term used fro the devotees of Lord Ganesha) chant the Gayatri mantra:
"Tat Purushaaya Vidmahe
Vakratundaaya Dheemahi
Tanno Dhanti Prachodayaat"

Through this mantra they ask for blessings of knowledge, wisdom and pray that no obstacles come their way. They also believe that chanting this mantra before starting any new work, expedition etc is auspicious.

On the day of Ganesha Chaturthi, people organize an elaborate Puja as per what they can afford. Usually, the Pujas are organized at a community level. Big Ganesha idols are out for public display in decorated tents. Priest clad in red dhoti and shawl, perform the rituals for prayers. This is followed by the ritual of Shhodashopachara, which consists of honoring Lord Ganesha in sixteen different ways. Jaggery, red flower petals, coconut, twenty one Modak, twenty one Durva blades etc are offered to Lord Ganesha. In order to invoke Lord Ganesha's blessings, the priest chant mantras from holy books like Rig Veda, Ganpati Atharva, Ganpati Strota etc.

For ten days, the prayers are offered to the deity and on the eleventh day the idol is taken on streets for a grand procession, where people sing & dance amidst the cloud of abir. The procession ends beside the sea shore or a river bank, where the idol of Ganpathi is immersed. The ritual of immersing the idol is called as 'Visarjan'. After Visarjan is performed, the idol of Ganesha should not be kept at home.

Lord Ganesha is one of the most favorite deities of Hindus. He is the lord of education, wisdom, knowledge and even of wealth. He is also the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride. Ganesha pujan is a must to follow any new beginning among Hindus. Celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi amidst the cloud of abir and sounds shouting slogan "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aa" (Ay Father Ganesha, bestow your presence early next year)
