The New Year celebrated by Hindus all over India is known as the Hindu New Year. It is said that the Hindu New Year is celebrated twice. Thirteenth or fourteenth of April is celebrated as New Year by majority of Hindus as it is a festival of harvest and marks a start for new agricultural cycle. People celebrate this New Year as a festival of harvest because it produces a high yield of crops. Hindu New Year welcomes the spring season that further promises a bountiful production for the year. Diwali is also considered to be a Hindu year and it is celebrated in the month of October or November.
This festival of Hindu New Year is celebrated in different parts of India in form of spring festivals by different names and the names through which the Hindu New Year is known are given below:
Baisakhi is celebrated on thirteenth of April and people of Punjab celebrate it as New Year.
Gudi padva is celebrated as New Year in Maharashtra and it is celebrated during the month of March or April.
People of Kashmir celebrate New Year in spring season during Navreh festival.
Naba barsha is celebrated as New Year by Bengalis during the month of April.
So we can make out that the Hindu New Year is celebrated as the spring season in different parts of India.
Hindus also celebrate the festival of Diwali as New Year as it marks the beginning of New Year and victory of good over evil. The festival of Diwali is celebrated in the month of October or November and it is considered to be the biggest festival that is celebrated by the major part of India. People start preparing for Diwali much before and clean their houses to welcome the New Year. Sweets are exchanged among people on this festival to greet everyone a very Happy New Year.
