| These temples are classified into three groups-the western group, the eastern group, and the southern group. The western group is devoted to the worship of Lakshmi and Varaha, Lakshmana, Kandariya Mahadeo, Magadeva, Devi jagdamba, Chitragupta, Parvati, Vishwanatha and Mantangeshvara. And the eastern group to Parsvanath, Shanti Nath, Ghantai, Javari, Vamana, Brahma and Hanuman and southern consists of Duladeo and the Chaturbhuja temples. Between C 900-1100 AD, the chandela dynasty built 85 temples of which 20 remains as an embodiments of Indian art and sculptures making Khajuraho shines like a star in the galaxy of historical sites. In the 10th century Khajuraho art was at its zenith so it's temples are also popularly known as the 10th century temples.
Khajuraho Dance Festival is held every spring in the town of Khajuraho in order to celebrate the glory of the temples. It is believed that classical dance basically comes from the Hindu temples and attained it's maturity. This Festival is a cultural festival for the celebration of the Indian arts- dance and music handling down from generation to generation. The Khajuraho Festival of Dances shows the best classical dancers and dances in the country. It is held during the month of March from 6th to 12th. Different classical dances are presented during this festival, like the -Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri etc. |
